The Old Days

You have no idea how much I miss the old days
when all the hills were new, and
the earth was alien and blue
At least once it was true:
you were a breakthrough,
somebody new, to
bleed the old blood in me
You were a road that went somewhere free

Everyone was a character before they became my friends
Every song was a genre before I knew the words
The past I knew was gone,
and where the ashes blew, I don’t know
All the things I thought I knew were wrong
And it was a gas to move along

I had no roots to draw from
It was a magic terrifying trou
and it could all fall through
but there was time for everything to change
But I was so dismayed
in the end I was myself again,
and we all moved on
and we went our separate ways alone

Everyone was a character
They never were my friends
Every song that I heard again sounded maddeningly the same
The past I knew was gone,
and where the ashes blew, I don’t know
All the things I thought I knew were wrong
And I didn’t want to move along.

At least once it was true:
you were a breakthrough,
somebody new, to
bleed the old blood in me
You were a road that went somewhere free
